DoN OSBP Remembers the Honorable Tracey Lee Pinson

SBF - Ms. Tracey Pinson

On December 14, 2014, according to civilian military sources, the Small Business community lost one of its strongest and most influential supporters, the Honorable Tracey Lee Pinson.

Tracey Pinson, former director for the Office of Small Business Programs in the Office of the Secretary of the Army for over 20 years, was a pillar in the Small Business community. Until her retirement this past summer, Ms. Pinson was the highest-ranking female civilian in the Army acquisition field, a position equal to that of a two-star general and even earned the 2014 Department of the Army Award for Meritorious Civilian Service for her dedication to Small Businesses. Under her leadership, the Army succeeded in awarding over $300B in federal contracts to small businesses, including over $100B to Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Minority Serving Institutions, as well as $50B to veteran-owned small businesses.

Recently, Ms. Pinson served on a Panel for the Department of Navy’s Small Business Forum at the 2014 Sea Air Space Symposium in April. As a Panelist, she discussed the Army’s federal acquisition process and answered questions from more than 100 small business representative attendees. In addition to providing solid advice to small businesses on acquiring federal contracts, Ms. Pinson was known for her direct emphasis on the power of networking and recommended utilizing professional association events such as the Small Business Forum to reach out to agencies and other businesses . “When you walk into a room and you don’t know anyone there; you have two choices. You can either hang out by yourself, or you can seek out a friendly face. Someone has to start the conversation,” she said. “Why shouldn’t it be you?”

The Department of the Navy Office of Small Business Programs thanks Ms. Pinson for all of her hard work and dedication to Small Business and extends our condolences to her family, friends and colleagues.
