Alton-based engineering and surveying firm Hutson and Associates Inc., along with national partner Hanson Professional Services Inc., was awarded a $15 million contract to provide engineering and telecommunications services to a California naval facility.

The Naval Facilities Engineering and Expeditionary Warfare Center in Port Hueneme, Calif., provides specialized facilities for engineering, technology solutions and life-cycle management of expeditionary equipment to the Navy, Marine Corps, federal agencies and other Department of Defense supported commands. The center’s technological services support secure communications systems, including very low frequency systems.

The Hutson-Hanson Mentor-Protégé Joint Venture, the name of the collaboration between the Alton-based company and Hanson Professional Services out of Springfield, Ill., will assist with engineering, inspection and other services related to low frequency communications systems facilities worldwide, including buildings, towers, transmitters, communications sites and more.

The venture was formed in 2014 to provide services to the U.S. government, and has been approved by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Hanson is mentoring Hutson in areas including technical services, accounting, marketing and business development. Hanson has worked with Hutson on federal projects for more than five years. The firms jointly provide geospatial services to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Joan Freitag, a senior vice president at Hanson who leads the federal services market, sees the contract as an opportunity for growth and collaboration.

“This contract is a great opportunity for us to help Hutson grow technically and financially as we provide these services to the U.S. Navy,” Freitag said.

Sara Hutson, president and chief financial officer of the Alton-based firm, said the contract offers an opportunity to develop the relatively small business.

“Our goal is to build new capabilities and grow our business in this unique service area,” Hutson said. “We are looking forward to the variety of projects and locations and the challenges they will present.”

Hutson and Associates Inc. was founded in 2003 by Hutson and her husband, Aaron Hutson, vice president and chief executive officer. According to the company’s website, Hutson has worked on projects with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the ConocoPhillips Refinery in Wood River, the Westchester Group of Macoupin County and Wal-Mart in Carlinville, Ill.
